研究内容
My primary research interests are in the fields of evolution and adaptation, biogeography and speciation. During my graduate years I focused on host / parasite adaptations and co-evolutionary strategies in freshwater fishes and marine mammals. Then I moved to marine gastropods and presently I work on patterns and trends of speciation, extinction and adaptation, biogeography and ecology of coastal invertebrate communities. I use morphologies as tools to assess predation and escalation levels in recent and fossil communities related to abundances, diversity and primary productivity levels.
Another important theme in my research is with climate change induced ocean acidification, its impact in carbonate building organisms and consequences for coastal biodiversity. Being an evolutionary biologist, I combine both recent and paleontological data for a better understanding of issues of changing environments and its effects in the evolutionary process.
抱負
These are exciting times to be in science but these are also times of caution. A big portion of the biodiversity of our planet has disappeared or is threatened. This is especially true for marine environments as they are much less known and because we tend to think that the oceans are ‘infinite’ and able to recover ‘miraculously’. It is our duty as both scientists and teachers to show the next generation of citizens that Earth’s future is truly their own future. They are to decide what this future will be and whether they want to be part of it. To make them aware of this responsibility should be our main mission.
